Laugh It Up at Tommy T’s
January 31, 2008
The Tri-Valley town of Pleasanton, which has traditionally been known for its historic downtown area, small-town charm and beautiful parks is turning things up a notch. In mid-2007, Pleasanton became home to Tommy T’s comedy nightclub. The club is in full swing and serves up audiences’ local favorites and top comedic headliners. Recent acts have included the likes of DL Hughley and Christopher Titus. A few weeks ago, I took the plunge and spent my night downing food, drinks and a belly of laughs at Tommy T’s.
The group I went with opted for the 7:30 show. We had heard that it might be easier to get a great table and not have to wait outside in the freezing cold. And we knew we had to order two items in addition to the cost of the show, so we figured we would eat dinner at our table before the show started. I highly recommend… getting there early (I think doors open at 5:30). You’ll get a pretty good selection of tables and then have plenty of time to eat. I read some reviews and chatted with a few regulars, and I still didn’t know what to expect for their quality of food. I was pleasantly surprised. We started with the calamari (it was ok). I ordered the beef kabobs and the other people in my party downed some huge hamburgers and a chicken sandwich. Everybody said the food was good. Not five-star dining, but excellent nightclub grub.
We all would clearly say that the fun atmosphere of the club and the entertainment was great. The owner and design team did a great job of remodeling the club from the old Hungry Hunter restaurant days. The headliner that we were on tap to see was Aisha Tyler of 24, Talk Soup, and CSI fame. Before Aisha came on we were entertained by Tommy T’s marketing manager, Ed Tracey, who has a wicked sense of humor and did a great job warming up the crowd. He had folks come on stage and do weird things for prizes. In fact, if I wanted to throw someone a hilarious birthday party, I would definitely consider working with Tommy T’s on it. He then introduced the undercard and handed over the mic to Kirk McHenry.
Kirk may not be nationally known yet, however I hear he has a heavy local following. I think McHenry’s set even rivaled the act of the headliner. I was laughing hard for his entire performance.
All in all, a fun night out with friends. My wife loves stand-up, so returning is not a question of if, but when.
